Asteroid mining belongs to a much later stage of Motus Gridia, after the network has already proved that it can support life on Earth. Hubs must be mature enough to carry complex operations, while spaceports must already work safely.
Workshop Grids also need the ability to turn unfamiliar feedstock into dependable parts. The energy reserve must be strong enough to support off-planet industry without weakening daily life below.
The reason to go that far is material pressure. A planetary Magway would consume enormous amounts of metal as it expands, while the machinery behind the network would create a continuing demand for replacement parts.
Power systems would need specialised inputs. So would medical technology. Recycling can keep existing material in circulation for longer, and local production can reduce waste by making only what is needed. Those systems still have limits.
