The Ghost Hunters work the preserved old architecture at the cold edge of the Off-Grid. Ruined high-rises, abandoned subway stations, pre-Grid factories — the kind of structures the network did not bother to tear down because nobody lives in them and the cold keeps them quiet. The Hunters live inside. They patrol the buildings and, more importantly, they watch the line that separates them from the bacterium zones to the south.
Why they exist ¶
The bacterium has always been a heat problem. It survives in warm climates, spreads fast in humid ones, and historically dies out inside a few days of sub-freezing ambient temperature. The cold was never defence. It was thermodynamics. The whole reason the northern architecture was preserved at all is that the cold kept it safe enough to leave alone.
That window is closing. The bacterium is evolving to survive the cold. Not quickly, but steadily — each generation of the pathogen tolerates a slightly lower mean temperature than the last. The Hunters are the first faction to see the shift in daily field data because the Hunters are the ones checking the sensors.
What they do ¶
They maintain the cold-zone early-warning network. Temperature-triggered tripwires, bacterium-profile samplers along every southern approach, and long patrols through the preserved buildings where any warming-edge strain would colonise first. When a sample comes back positive for cold-adapted growth, they log it, they broadcast it, and they escalate to the On-Grid Society's response machinery — even though the Hunters themselves are Off-Grid.
Why they matter ¶
The Ghost Hunters are the faction whose existence is tied to a clock nobody else is watching. Every other side on the map treats the bacterium as C2's problem. The Hunters treat it as theirs, because their home is the frontier and their frontier is advancing toward them. If the bacterium clears the cold barrier completely, the Hunters are the first faction the Grids will need to either absorb or evacuate. They are the canary for whether the cold-north strategy still works at all.
