A plasma crystal sword is a blade in the shape you expect and a weapon nothing like it. The blade is a single engineered crystal — grown long, cut for shape, tempered to a hardness that shrugs off most rifle rounds and all melee weapons that are not also plasma crystal. Running through the length of the crystal is a channel of plasma, drawn from the hilt's reactor and held in place by the crystal's own lattice. When the weapon is live, the channel glows from the inside and radiates heat fit to cook through armour on contact. When it is docked, the crystal is cool and unremarkable — a dark glass edge you can carry on a belt.
What makes it distinct ¶
It is not a lightsabre. The blade is a physical object, not a projected field. You can block with it, notch it, sheathe it. What the plasma gives is the heat and the cutting edge — a through-crystal channel running from pommel to tip means the edge is always hotter than the material it is cutting into. A clean swing through armour closes behind itself: the crystal shears, the plasma cauterises, the opponent drops in half. The weapon is quiet — no hum, no start-up noise. The only tell is the colour running up the blade.
Where they come from ¶
The craft bays that sit between the Grids and the Off-Grid build them. The Off-Grid cannot manufacture an e-hair chip at scale, but it can grow a crystal and draw plasma from the same reprocessing lines the On-Grid uses for Advanced Materials work. The result is an Off-Grid signature weapon — elite Off-Grid fighters, veteran adventurers, and the Northern warlords all carry them. The On-Grid has them in its armouries too, but rarely deploys them. The network prefers e-hair for most of its work, and issues plasma crystal only to operators whose missions require a weapon that cannot be traced back to the chip.
Why it matters ¶
The plasma crystal sword is the answer the fiction gives to the question of what melee looks like in a world with e-hair and alien parasites on the field. A fight between two full-power combatants cannot be decided by an ordinary edged weapon — neither will bleed fast enough from a clean cut to lose. The crystal sword is the class of weapon that ends those fights. It is also the class of weapon the Off-Grid can make without the On-Grid's permission, which is why it shows up everywhere the Off-Grid does.
